Southwest (SW) Calgary Real Estate

SW Calgary Outer Suburbs

Generally speaking, the SW outer suburbs that are considered to be the central west area are bounded by the Sarcee Trail in the east and the Trans-Canada Highway in the north. The furthermost western suburbs are bounded by the MacLeod Trail to the east and the Glenmore Reservoir to the north. In these outer areas most of the properties available are of the single family unit variety. There are opportunities occasionally present to purchase townhouses, condominiums or duplexes.

SW Calgary Outer Suburbs: Schools

The majority of the schools available in the SW outer suburbs come under Area V of the Calgary Board of Education system, which incorporates areas in both the SW and SE of the city. There are currently 46 schools operational under this system (with another 3 due to be added by September 2010), ranging from Elementary to High School. There are also several schools dedicated to those children who need additional support for their learning. In addition to this, there are 25 Roman Catholic Separate School District faculties. The SW quadrant has a significant number of private schools including The Calgary Jewish Academy, the Green Learning Academy and Webber Academy.

SW Calgary Outer Suburbs: Shopping, Dining & Recreation

The outer suburbs of the SW quadrant are brimming with shopping, recreation and dining opportunities. In terms of retail outlets, the SW outer suburbs have a good variety of outlets, most within easy walking distances of the heart of each community. Large shopping centers are prominent in this area of Calgary including Glenmore Landing, Westbrook Mall, the Chinook Center and Richmond Square Shopping Center, to name but a few. Most of the shopping areas also contain dining establishments in various forms such as formal fine dining restaurants, pubs and coffee shops.

In terms of recreation, there is an outdoor world full of excitement to be found in the outer suburbs of the SW quadrant. The Glenmore Reservoir and Fish Creek Provincial Park are popular nearby favorites with many residents and there is an abundance of wide, open space and playgrounds. Activities such as golf are widely available and swimming, sailing or fishing is possible by venturing out to the Glenmore Reservoir for the day. As with the rest of Calgary, there are adequate trails, public pathways and cyclepaths available in the SW.

SW Calgary Outer Suburbs: Transportation

Getting around the outer suburbs of the SW quadrant is relatively easy and there are several different options. If you drive your own vehicle there is easy and quick access to many of the major routes that link the different areas of the city. This includes the Glenmore Trail, Heritage Drive SW, the Marquis of Lorne Trail SW, 14th Street SW and Anderson Road SW. The C-Train runs on the 201 route in this part of the city and several routes of the Calgary Transit bus service pass through the SW communities for easy access to the Downtown area of the city. Prominent cyclepaths, footpaths and trails exist for those who wish to walk, run, rollerblade or cycle to other parts of Calgary.

SW Calgary Inner City

In contrast to the SW outer suburbs, the inner city area of the SW quadrant is privy to a wide selection of townhouses, apartments and condominiums, making it the perfect area for professional couples or first-time buyers. The inner city is bordered by the Glenmore Trail in the south, 17th Avenue in the north, the MacLeod Trail to the east and the Crowchild Trail to the west. The Downtown core of Calgary is within easy reach of the inner city and this is also a reason why it is popular with those who have to commute for work. In each community in the SW inner city section, you will find different atmospheres and a wide spread of community types, from the down-to-earth neighborhoods such as Southwood, to the well-off areas such as Mount Royal.

SW Calgary Inner City: Schools

Most of the SW inner city educational establishments fall into Area IV of the Calgary Board of Education's system. There are 46 schools from Elementary to High School, with 3 schools dedicated to helping those children who have special needs. The Calgary Catholic School District operates 25 schools in the SW inner city area and there is one private school available, the Christopher Robin School.

SW Calgary Inner City: Shopping, Dining & Recreation

Within the boundaries of the SW inner city, there are several notable areas which are designed for great shopping and dining opportunities. This includes 17th Avenue SW and the Marda Loop zone which is located in between the neighborhoods of Richmond and South Calgary. The Marda Loop in particular has a host of shops, cafes, boutiques and retail outlets, all offering a unique shopping experience. The Chinook Center is also situated in the SW inner city area and boasts being one of the biggest shopping centers to be found in the country.

In terms of recreation, there is an abundance of green space, parks and playgrounds to be found in this area of the SW quadrant. The inner city residents of the Southwest enjoy access to places such as Altadore Park, the Glenmore Reservoir, Calgary Golf & Country Club, Riverdale Park and Roxboro Park. There are also a range of beautiful parks dotted along the Elbow River, offering a variety of recreational activities and opportunities.
