New Year’s Eve is a great time to celebrate with your family, and the City of Calgary has provided an excellent opportunity for families to enjoy some excellent entertainment at the Fire & Ice New Year’s Celebration. The even t is being held on December 31st from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Olympic Plaza.
The event is perfect for families with young children, as the “countdown” begins just prior to 9 p.m. and is followed by a fireworks show – so families can still get home at a decent time. Other activities available include:
- Public skating, with free skates to borrow if you don’t have your own.
- Live music and entertainment.
- Live performances by fire spinners, ice skaters, and more. More information on scheduled performances is available here.
- Indoor heated craft zone at Epcor Centre where kids and parents can make paper lanterns.
While you are there, your family can visit the ice sculpture garden, watch the Theatre of the Living Statues, and check out a juggling show. There is also a “warming zone” at the Municipal Building in case the little ones get cold.
Getting There
Park at the City Hall’s Civic Parkade, or help the environment by taking public transit. The C-Train, which stops directly in front of Olympic Plaza is free to ride from 6pm. See the Calgary Transit page for more information.
In Case of Cold
Although the weather looks like it will hold above -20°C for New Year’s Eve, in the event that temperatures drop below -25°C there is the possibility that some activities may be changed or cancelled. For more information on potential cancellations check here.
If you need more information on this even, visit the City of Calgary Fire & Ice page.
