City of Calgary, Alberta Helps Tackle Pet Overpopulation

Posted by Carlos Montes on Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010 at 6:06pm.

Residents of Calgary now have a new option to help prevent their pets from procreating with the help of the new no cost spay and neuter program for cats and dogs. The program, offered through Animal and Bylaw Services, includes a free spay and neuter for a cat or dog, as well as a six month license and a microchip. To expedite the process, residents can fill out a single application form for all dogs and cats in their household.

Eligibility is based on family income, and to qualify pen owners need to have a total household income that is 85% or less than the Statistics Canada low income cut off, or LICO. Additionally, pets must be in good health at the time of surgery, be over two pounds in weight and be at least 8 weeks old. Surgeries are performed at the Animal Services Centre Clinic (adjacent to the Portland Street Animal Services Centre).

Interested dog and cat owners can pick up an application form from the Animal Services Centre, located at 2201 Portland Street S.E. Hours of Operation are Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More information (and printable application forms) is available at the

animal services page of the www.calgary.ca website. Residents can also call 3-1-1 to request to have an application sent to them via mail.

On a similar note, Animal Services is asking for the public’s help with their cat overcrowding problem. Right now the facility is at maximum capacity for cats and needs to find good homes for these loveable critters. Cats are $150 to adopt, and include spaying or neutering, a 6 month license, microchip, vaccines, deworming, and even a bag of cat food.

Consider opening your home to a feline friend, or even offer to foster some cats for the short term. Every little bit helps!
