Calgary, Alberta Wins Heritage Preservation Award
Posted by Carlos Montes on Wednesday, December 8th, 2010 at 6:08am.As if Calgarians didn’t have enough to be proud of in our fair city – it has now been recognized for protecting historic resources with the Alberta Historical Resources Foundation Municipal Heritage Preservation Award.
Senior Heritage Planner at The City of Calgary, Darryl Cariou responded to this prestigious recognition by saying “The award acknowledges that The City of Calgary is a provincial leader in heritage preservation. As a result of The City’s commitment to heritage preservation over the past two decades, 35 sites have been legally protected as Municipal Historic Resources”.
The award is also significant in that it recognizes the close working relationship The City of Calgary has with local non-profit and community groups when it comes to preserving heritage buildings. Calgary was nominated for the award by the Calgary Heritage Initiative Society (CHI), which is a volunteer-driven group that is dedicated to preserving historical sites and buildings in the area.
Established in 1973 by provincial legislature, The Alberta Historical Resources Foundation is charged with raising awareness of Alberta’s cultural heritage, and the awards are intended to recognize significant contributions by Alberta groups and individuals who work to preserve and promote local heritage.
