Last week on September 18, the Bowness Park in Calgary became the venue for the Responsible Dog Ownership Day. The event was held from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Organized by the Calgary Associated Dog Fanciers as well as the City of Calgary Animal & Bylaw Services, residents of the city were invited to bring their licensed dogs for a series of demonstrations and activities.

The Responsible Dog Ownership Day is a national program that the Canadian Kennel Club started for the purpose of educating dog owners across Canada regarding pet ownership responsibilities. The objectives of the event are to educate as well as entertain the participants.

According to the Policy and Public Education of the City of Calgary Animal and Bylaw Services, one of the main problems of pet owners is their lack of information regarding pet opportunities. There are many dog sports and activities that can be done in Calgary. Oftentimes, they are not availed of simply because the pet owner does not know about them.

What the Responsible Dog Ownership Day does is showcase these activities. During the event, dogs were seen exercising their skills. They jumped hurdles and followed the scents of planted dumbbells. Even the traditional activities of playing with Frisbees, going through obstacle courses, and following their owners’ commands were featured. Photographs of pets were taken by Urban Vive Pet Photography.

Aside from these activities, the dogs and their owners were given the opportunity to watch demonstrations in events such as Agility, Scent Hurdle, and Flyball testing. Dogs were allowed to interact with other dogs and people. Dog-dressing contests were also held during the event. Since the one-day event was touted as a family occasion, not all the activities were meant for pets. There were also hourly contests meant for children.

The Heartland Veterinary Clinic was onsite during the event to demonstrate to families how to properly care for their dogs. Among the subjects tackled were how to trim dog nails, clean their ears, and brush their teeth. Proper grooming is essential in taking care of the pets. Other organizations that participated in the event were the Calgary Humane Society and other rescue groups as well as Mungo’s Books for Dog People that provided educational resources.

According to the City of Calgary Animal and Bylaw Services, the event was not only meant to be enjoyable for the dogs but also to equip them with the necessary social skills. Part of the responsible pet ownership is making sure that the dogs get along well with other people and animals to improve safety.

Well-mannered dogs make the locality safer because there are fewer instances of dog bites and dog violence. Also, dogs that are properly trained do not the dirty up the streets to result in better hygiene for the entire city. Ultimately, there is a redounding benefit to the community and state of Calgary real estate: better behaved pets can improve the value of the neighborhood and the quality of life of residents.
