Black Cart Program finally coming to Northwest and Southwest Calgary

Northwest and Southwest residents of Calgary, Alberta will soon be receiving their black carts for automated garbage collection. Deliveries of the Black Carts will begin in the northwest on April 25, 2011. By the end of June all homes including the southwest will have the carts. Over twenty thousand carts are to be delivered weekly and residents are to begin usage of this program as soon as they arrive.

The Black Cart program began in October of 2010 and there are currently about One Hundred Twenty Thousand homes in the northeast and southeast that have received their carts. According to surveys 95 per cent of black cart users say their garbage collection has improved or remained the same with automated garbage collection. 87 per cent of black cart users say the cart is easy to use.

Over three-quarters (77 per cent) of black cart users are able to dispose of all of their household garbage in the Black Cart, while only one in five (21 per cent) sometimes have to set out additional bags beside their cart. 64 per cent agree the program has resulted in their community being cleaner.

The implementation of the Black Cart program are not only improving garbage collection but has made is safer, cleaner and more efficient. The reduction of injury has also been a positive. No garbage collectors have lost time off work due to injury in comparison to 22 injuries the previous year.

-extra bags that do not fit in cart will also be picked up at no cost

-same size as blue recycling carts

-can hold the equivalent of 3 or 4 bags depending on size

-follow same schedule as normal garbage pickup
