Alberta, Prepare for New Driving Laws September 1st

Posted by Carlos Montes on Friday, June 24th, 2011 at 3:46pm.

Beginning September 1st Alberta drivers will face new laws that forbid the use of cell phones and other hand-held devices while driving in the province. Announced Wednesday morning, the law prohibits the use of hand-held phone calls, texts, and e-mailing while operating a vehicle. Other devices including video games, cameras, laptops, and GPS devices are also forbidden to be used while driving, as well as any other activities that distract the driver.

Failure to comply with the new law could result in a $172 fine, so drivers are encouraged to invest in hands-free devices when needed, such as a Bluetooth device for phone calls that can’t wait until arrival. Other hands-free devices are still approved, such as voice recognition navigation, as well as eating and drinking while driving as long as it doesn’t interfere with the operation of the vehicle.

Hopefully these new driving laws will help reduce accidents and make the roads safer for all Calgarians.
