It was cold, but it was glorious. The hometown Calgary Flames showed fans and the visiting Montreal Canadiens how outdoor hockey is done with a 4-0 blowout at the Heritage Classic this past Sunday.
Over 41,000 fans were in the stands at McMahon Stadium to cheers on their team at the first outdoor, regular season game in Canada since 2003. They braved the -10C weather, the wind chill, and were rewarded with some great hockey. But how did the event help Calgary?
Tourism Calgary reports that local business, particularly restaurants and retailers, reported an increase in out-of-town business, and that the event also drew a large television crowd to help boost future tourism dollars. Versus reports that over 600,000 U.S. viewers tuned into the game, making it the fourth most-watched regular season game in network history. Meanwhile, Canadian viewers on CBC numbered over 2 million. Let’s hope that the great numbers mean that The Heritage Classic will become an annual event in the city.
If you were at the event and purchased a 50/50 ticket you may want to check your numbers, as the $76,000 jackpot has not been claimed. The winning ticket was No. 45865 and the winner has 30 days to claim their prize by calling 403-777-4618.
